PLANS TO REDEVELOP A SANTA MONICA VONS SUPERMARKET WITH HOUSING AND RETAIL

KEEPING YOU INFORMED IN SANTA MONICA

The developer behind this project, Related California, is seeking approval from the City of Santa Monica to annihilate the current general store and its parking garage, clearing a path for the development. They are adding a new five-to-eight-story building including 296 apartments with a 63,000-square-foot space for Vons, a gym, and a restaurant on the ground floor.  Plans also include a two-level, 374-vehicle basement garage.

LARGE Architecture is designing the project, which is portrayed in a staff report as having three separate plan articulations, including a curvilinear structure along Broadway, folds facing 7th Street, and waves along Lincoln Blvd. Proposed exterior finishes include brick facade, glass, and wood accents. Plans also involve open space amenities, for example, a rooftop deck and a large pool.

“The proposed development would include a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings - including 89 units of deed-restricted affordable units, or 30 percent of the project total” (Sharp, 2021, p. 1)

This project is also neighbored by a handful of similar mixed-use projects which are now planned or under construction. These development plans will modernize housing in Santa Monica. This will be an excellent community asset, also the ratio of affordable units is quite decent (30%).
